Academisation: Property Considerations
For those SBM’s and senior leaders who are considering becoming an academy or joining a multi academy trust (MAT) there are a mountain of things to consider across the areas of finance, human resources, payroll and pensions, and facilities management – many of which you may not have had responsibility for previously.
After helping over 200 schools make the transition to academy or MAT status Strictly Education were well placed to advise conference delegates on the key steps and considerations when embarking on this journey.
Amongst the many other pre-requisites that need to be met prior to conversion, making sure your buildings and capital assets are in good repair and in a state of operational readiness is an important legal and health and safety requirement.
After understanding your new responsibilities as the new lease and duty holder, it is important to find out the current condition of the buildings and any ongoing or planned works for which you are financially liable for, prepare both revenue and capital budgets and set up planned and reactive maintenance regimes. Site and cleaning cover will also need to be organised in order that your academy remains open, clean and safe for children to learn in.
