NEW National Standards of excellence for Headteachers
The revised National Standards for Headteachers were launched earlier this week by the Secretary of State for Education, Nicky Morgan.
Rather than simply creating a set of baseline standards, the new ‘standards of excellence’ set out the skills, knowledge and behaviour headteachers should aspire to, including:
- raising the bar for all pupils, overcoming disadvantage and instilling a strong sense of accountability in staff for the impact of their work on pupils’ success
- boosting teacher quality through high-level training and sustained professional development
- identifying talent and coaching current and aspiring leaders of the future
It is important to note that these are aspirational standards of excellence, rather than standards to be used as a minimum baseline. They are intended to provoke thought and inspire all headteachers to consider how they could improve within the framework of a self-improving school, and will also act as a useful tool for governing boards.
The revised standards are now available through our website on this link. We would also recommend that the document is passed to your Chair of Governors for information.
